A point-based reward system characteristic of the mechanics of role-playing games for successful actions (e.g. defeating an opponent, disarming a trap, completing a task), showing the gradual increase in the skill of the player-controlled character. Experience points are accumulated, and after reaching a given level, it is possible to advance the hero to the next level of development.

The element was taken from traditional role-playing games of the “pen & paper” type and is successfully used, among others in cRPG productions (also MMORPG) and action-RPG, but also as a borrowing, e.g. in some real-time strategies or action games.
